At Dental Care of Chino Hills, our approach to tooth extraction involves optimizing patient comfort and safety. We provide a stress-free experience, from routine extraction to complex wisdom teeth removal, at our Chino Hills office.
When to Have a Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction involves removing the entire tooth from the gums. Ideally, patients will spend their entire lives with a full set of healthy teeth. However, some cases may require removing a tooth to preserve your overall oral health. We always consider extraction a last resort solution, and we explore less intensive alternatives whenever possible.
Typically, we reserve extraction for cases such as:
- Severely damaged teeth (due to decay or injury)
- Significant crowding issues
- Deep infection that a root canal cannot address
- Significant tooth position issues
What About Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth removal is the most common type of extraction we perform. Your wisdom teeth (or final set of molars) typically grow in during the adolescent and early adulthood years. However, many people do not have enough room in their jaw for these teeth. This can lead to issues such as crowding, impacted teeth, infection, and more.
As a family dentist, we monitor a patient’s wisdom teeth from a young age. Based on their jaw size and current dental health, we may recommend wisdom teeth removal as a preventative measure. This prevents any complications from happening later on.

When wisdom teeth grow in an improper way it can cause many problems like gum disease, bone destroying cysts, crowding or other damage to adjacent teeth. The common symptoms of this problem are pain and swelling.
If you feel these kinds of symptoms because of your wisdom teeth, you should visit your dentist to have it diagnosed and extracted immediately.
Tooth Extraction Procedure Overview
While this procedure counts as surgery, patients typically express surprise at how mild the experience is. We ensure you feel no pain by using local numbing for simpler cases. For complex extractions (like with impacted wisdom teeth), we may also recommend sedation.
Simple extractions take a matter of minutes. The procedure ends almost as quickly as it begins. Complex extractions can take longer for each tooth. For example, a more involved wisdom tooth removal procedure can take over 1 hour. We close the incisions with surgical thread. We use a special type that will eventually come out on its own, so you will not even need a follow-up visit.
After the procedure, you can return home right away. However, if you had any sedation, you will need someone to drive you. We are always only a phone call away if you have any questions following your extraction.
FAQs
Does the procedure hurt?
We always take every step to ensure the surgery involves no pain. Having a tooth pulled can certainly sound intimidating. However, anesthesia ensures you feel no discomfort. However, you may feel some pressure or pulling if you have an awake procedure. These sensations may feel uncanny, but they do not reach the level of discomfort or pain.
What is the recovery like?
The gums can heal remarkably quickly. However, tooth extraction does require a brief recovery period. Swelling and some discomfort are the most notable parts of this process. However, these gradually fade, and you can manage pain with medication. Some minor bleeding is also normal.
For simple extractions, patients may take a day or two off from work. For wisdom teeth removal, you may need a few days off from work or school. Generally, swelling resolves in about 1 week. In either case, your dentist will provide instructions on how to proceed after surgery. These include:
- Rinsing the site to prevent infection
- Avoiding suction (e.g., using straws)
- Eating only soft foods for a time
What are my options for replacing a tooth?
Removing a tooth is a notable decision to make and can leave patients feeling uncertain about their smile’s future. Fortunately, many tooth replacement options exist. Patients will not need to replace wisdom teeth. However, most patients will benefit from replacing any other missing teeth. Options include dental implants and dental bridges, each with its own advantages. Replacing a tooth can prevent your remaining teeth from shifting and improve comfort when speaking or chewing.
Does everyone need wisdom teeth removal?
Plenty of patients will have no issues with their wisdom teeth. Some people are even born without them. However, a patient without enough room in their mouth will generally need to remove them. Ideally, your dentist will inform you well ahead of time of the best path forward. We monitor patient health so we can remove wisdom teeth before they cause issues.
